Alternative Radio is a weekly one-hour public affairs program offered free to all public radio stations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and on short-wave on Radio for Peace International. AR provides information, analyses and views that are frequently ignored or distorted in other media. Established in 1986, AR is dedicated to the founding principles of public broadcasting, which urge that programming serve as “a forum for controversy and debate,” be diverse and “provide a voice for groups that may otherwise be unheard.” The project is entirely independent, sustained solely by individuals who buy transcripts and tapes of programs. Its “headquarters” is situated to correspond with its position in the mainstream mass media: down an alley, behind a house, on top of a garage in Boulder, Colorado. From this rarefied location, AR’s programs manage to reach over 125 radio stations and millions of listeners. AR is part of the non-profit Institute for Social and Cultural Change.

The show is hosted by performing songwriting duo John & Viv and originates in the Creative Heart of the Land of Enchantment, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Bioneers, founded in 1990, is a nonprofit organization that promotes practical environmental solutions and innovative social strategies for restoring the Earth and communities. “It’s All Alive, It’s All Intelligent, It’s All Connected.” Bioneers offers pragmatic solutions that honor the living web of the natural world as the most fertile source of inspiration and models. It’s all alive. One of the beauties of biology is that its facts can become our metaphors, and these underlying codes serve as inspiring parables for how we can organize a more just, humane and authentically sustainable society. It’s all intelligent. Interdependence also teaches us that there are no single issues because it’s one whole that can be addressed only by bringing together all the parts. Bioneers gathers people at the crossroads of ecological restoration, human health and social justice. It’s all connected. The bioneers span all fields, cultures, ages and walks of life. The work ranges from science to spirit – local to global – academia to the grass roots – farm to city – business to public service – art to engineering. People’s Pharmacy
People’s Pharmacy The People’s Pharmacy® got its start in 1972 in a small village in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, where Terry was doing research in medical anthropology. Joe began writing a book to explain medications in an easy-to-understand, friendly style. His master’s degree in pharmacology from the University of Michigan and his teaching experience with medical students prepared him for this undertaking. Terry completed her doctoral degree from the University of Michigan and the Graedons moved to Durham, NC. Terry taught at the School of Nursing and the Department of Anthropology at Duke University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in medical anthropology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Joe has taught at Duke University School of Nursing and the UCSF School of Pharmacy and is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Pharmacy, where he also serves on the Board of Visitors. Joe has served as a consultant to the Federal Trade Commission on nonprescription drug advertising and is a member of the Society for Neuroscience. He received the Medical Self-Care award for The People’s Pharmacy. Terry belongs to the American Anthropological Association and the Society of Medical Anthropology. The Graedons were awarded the Silver Award for public affairs from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. They also received the “Health Headliner of 1998? Award from America Talks Health for “superior contribution to the advancement of medicine and public health education.” Joe and Terry were named Ambassadors of the City of Medicine in 1999 and were the 1999 Harriet Cook Carter Distinguished Lecturers for the Duke University School of Nursing.

This Way Out
This Way Out is the award-winning internationally distributed weekly GLBT radio program, currently airing on over 150 local commmunity radio stations around the world. The half-hour “magazine”-style program is produced in Los Angeles and distributed via the Public Radio Satellite System and Pacifica Radio’s KU satellite to stations in North America, and via satellite in Australia on the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s ComRadSat. “This Way Out” is also heard via direct satellite to home and cable outlets across Europe, South America, and in the Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific regions on the World Radio Network, and is heard globally on short wave station Radio For Peace International and online at Out in America. The program is also postal-mailed to non-satellite stations and to individual subscribers. Despite the limitations of a “tattered shoestring budget”, “This Way Out” programming has been honored with multiple awards from the U.S. National Federation Of Community Broadcasters and the Radio and Television News Association, by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Parents, Families and Friends Of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), the Los Angeles chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), and internationally by Tupilak (the organization of lesbian and gay cultural workers in the Nordic area).
